Sonication-assisted liquid exfoliation and size-dependent properties of magnetic two-dimensional α-RuCl<sub>3</sub>

Abstract Originating from the hexagonal arrangement of magnetic ions in presence strong spin orbit coupling, α -RuCl 3 is considered as model system for Kitaev-Heisenberg model. While properties have been studied bulk single crystals or micromechanically-exfoliated nanosheets, little known about nanosheets’ after exfoliation by techniques suitable mass production such liquid phase (LPE). Here, we demonstrate sonication-assisted LPE on an inert atmosphere. Coupled with centrifugation-based size selection techniques, accessible size- and thickness range quantified statistical atomic force microscopy. Individual nanosheets obtained are subjected to transmission electron microscopy confirm their structural integrity exfoliation. The results combined characterisation methods, including Raman x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, powder diffraction experiments evaluate nanosheets. We report changes nanomaterial nanosheet size, well photospectroscopic metrics material concentration average layer number. Finally, a quantitative analysis environmental effects performed based time temperature dependent absorbance spectroscopy revealing relatively slow decay (half-life ∼2000 h at 20 °C), albeit low activation energies 6–20 kJ mol −1 .
